Letter from creative director: Bo Lee
Going forward, each Open Market will have a particular concept that we will set the mood with. We hope this mood will be the primer in viewing the furniture pieces we have selected.
This Open Market is titled “In Bloom” after the song by Nirvana. For me, the title represents our youth and coming of age. I grew up in the 90s. I remember watching music videos on MTV as I stayed home from school. Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, Tupac, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre. I dreamed of playing in the NBA as I watched Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson go head to head, rented dragon ball on VHS and television was a huge part of our lives. I memorized the dance routine to HOT’s Candy and pretended I was Kang Ta. We played with super soakers, wore Tommy Hilfiger jeans, and flannel. We carried Walkmans, pagers and played on our Xbox. We hung out at the arcade and played Street Fighter and read comic books to pass the time. All our research was done on the Encyclopedia Britannica and regular gas was under one dollar per gallon. We chatted with strangers on AOL and thought *NSYNC would never break up.
It’s interesting to see a lot of today’s youth culture identifying with the 90s. It was a time of angst and rebellion, but ultimately innocence and joy. I wanted to bring back the playfulness and exuberance in doing the fall Open Market and hope we can all reflect on what brings us that excitement from our youth.
