YeongDoo Choi (YD) is many things. He’s a guitarist. He’s a music producer. He’s a part-time chef. He’s also GUVS Shop Manager. Despite the many job titles, he still manages to get into his furniture workshop and create these “bizarro” pieces that explode with color. I had a chance to correspond via email about his latest furniture project.
1. what was the idea behind this “Bizarro” collection?
YD: 미국에 살고 있는 ‘BO’ 라는 친구가 아이디어를 주었다.
‘Bizarro’ 는 DC 코믹스에서 나오는 용어로 평행 우주에 살고 있는 나와 똑같은 존재를 말하며
이 존재는 나와 반대의 성격을 가지고 있다.
기존에 만들어진 가구나 건축물을 다른 방법으로 존재하게 한다면 어떨까 라는 생각으로 작업을 시작하였다.
2. what attracts you the most about furniture and design?
YD: 실용성 (목적이 있는 디자인)
3. your instagram name is “Project Kumu,” is there a story to that name?
YD: KUMU 는 일본어 이고 뜻은 ‘짜다,맞추다’ 라는 의미를 가지고 있다.
목공을 시작하고 의미와 발음이 마음에 들어 프로젝트 이름으로 정하였다.
4. what designers, if any, influence your work?
YD: 크게 없다.
특정 인물보다 생활속에서 경험하는 것들이 작업에 영향을 준다.
5. the color scheme of “Bizarro” reminded me of an Ellsworth Kelly artwork, how do you choose
color and how important is it to your creation process?
YD: Bizarro.01 은 ‘르 꼬르뷔지에’ 의 ‘유니테 다비타시옹’ 의 재해석 버전이다.
실제로 그 건축물을 보았을때 삭막할수도 있는 외벽에 몇가지 색상을 넣어 생동감을 준것과,
그것과 반대로 내부는 외벽에 포인트로 사용했던 색상을 이용해 전체를 덮어놓은 인테리어가 인상적이었다.
최소한의 원색을 이용해 벤치는 외벽을 커피테이블은 내부를 흉내내보았다.

6. What are some historically important furniture pieces that you really enjoy?
YD: Gerrit Rietveld - Red Blue Chair
기교가 없고 구조와 목적을 위한 디자인이라고 생각한다. 그래서 좋아한다.
7. how do you see your work developing?
YD: 생각한것을 실행으로 옮기면 거의 대부분 실패를 한다.
실패의 원인을 찾고 문제점을 보완하면서 발전하고 있다고 생각한다.
8. what are you currently working on or will work on in the future?
YD: 오디오 장을 만들고 있다.
보편적인 재료로 최대한 단순하고 예뻐보이는 방법이 무엇일까를 생각하며 작업중이다.
